Meet the Authors

Contraceptive Technology, the basic reference book in family planning for physicians and allied health personnel, has sold over 1,500,000 copies in the United States and has been translated into several languages. The authors work closely with 26 other respected clinicians, scientists, and educators to produce the books.

Robert A. Hatcher, MD, MPH
Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Emory University School of Medicine, Dr. Hatcher for many years directed the family planning clinic at Grady Memorial Hospital. He serves on the Board of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. He is the founding author of Contraceptive Technology and has been an influential force in improving the quality of reproductive care in the United States and around the globe.
James Trussell, PhD
James Trussell is Professor of Economics and Public Affairs and Director of the Office of Population Research at Princeton University. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 scientific publications, primarily in the areas of reproductive health and demographic methodology. His recent research has been focused in three areas: emergency contraception, contraceptive failure, and the cost-effectiveness of contraception. He has actively promoted making emergency contraception more widely available as an important step in helping women reduce their risk of unintended pregnancy; in addition to his research on this topic, he maintains an emergency contraception website (not-2-late.com) and designed and launched a toll-free emergency contraception hotline (1-888-NOT-2-LATE). He is a senior fellow at the Guttmacher Institute and a member of the board of directors of the NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation and the Guttmacher Institute and a member of the National Medical Committee of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Anita Nelson, MD
Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Nelson oversees the Women's Health Care Programs at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA and in the Coastal County Clinics of Los Angeles County. She is Medical Director of the Research Division of the California Family Health Council. She serves on the editorial boards of a number of professional journals and frequently lectures on a number of women's health care topics.



Willard Cates, Jr, MD, MPH
At the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Cates was responsible for conducting research in reproductive health, directing research in sexually transmitted diseases, and overseeing the training of officers in the Epidemic Intelligence Service. Dr. Cates currently serves as President of Family Health International, Durham, NC.
Felicia Stewart, MD
After 20 years in gynecological practice, Dr. Stewart served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Population Affairs in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and as Adjunct Professor at the University of California San Francisco and Co-Director of the UCSF Center for Reproductive Health Research and Policy. She was the lead author of Understanding Your Body: Every Woman's Guide to Gynecology and Health. Dr. Stewart died of cancer in April 2006. She is greatly missed.





Deborah Kowal, MA, PA
Ms. Kowal, a medical writer and editor, consults for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and other health organizations. Trained as a physician assistant, she provided clinical care for young women at the University of Michigan before devoting her energies to writing. She is a the Executive Editor of Contraceptive Technology and its derivative works.
